Secret Service Monitoring Elon Musk’s Controversial Tweet About Biden and Harris
The U.S. Secret Service has acknowledged its awareness of a recent tweet by Elon Musk, in which he claimed that “no one is even trying” to assassinate President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris. The tweet has since been deleted, with Musk explaining that it was intended as a joke.
Musk's comment appeared on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after an attempted assassination of Donald Trump at his Florida golf course on Sunday. Known for his support of Trump, Musk has expressed interest in helping to create a "government efficiency commission" if Trump wins a second term.
The tweet, which included a raised eyebrow emoji, drew significant criticism on X. Many users interpreted Musk’s remarks as potentially inciting violence against the President and Vice President. The White House condemned the tweet as "irresponsible," emphasizing that "violence should never be encouraged or joked about."
In response to the controversy, the Secret Service confirmed it is "aware" of the tweet but did not provide further details, citing standard procedures for protective intelligence. The agency reassured that all threats against its protectees are investigated.
After deleting the tweet, Musk addressed the issue on X, saying, "One lesson I’ve learned is that just because I say something to a group and they laugh doesn’t mean it’s going to be all that hilarious as a post on X." He added, "Turns out that jokes are way less funny if people don’t know the context and the delivery is in plain text."
Musk, a staunch supporter of Trump, previously endorsed the former president following a separate assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. That incident involved a suspect who fired multiple shots, injuring Trump and killing a rally attendee. Since then, Musk has often criticized Biden and Harris while backing Trump.
